PRE-NATAL DIAGNOSIS
Prenatal diagnosis includes a variety of techniques to determine the health and condition of a baby before it’s born, such as:
- Ultrasound: to determine the size and position of the baby and placenta, the amount of amniotic fluid and measurement of the nuchal fold to determine the need for further abnormality testing
- Amniocentesis: which draws amniotic fluid containing foetal cells from inside the uterus to be grown in culture for analysis
- Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS): to diagnose genetic or chromosomal abnormalities such as Downs Syndrome by taking a small sample of cells from the placenta where it attaches to the wall of the uterus.
