COLPOSCOPY
A colposcopy is a simple close up examination the cervix (at the entrance to the uterus) and surrounding area, usually performed if abnormal cells appear on smear test results. Performed at the doctors’ clinic, a speculum is inserted into the vagina to allow a microscope-like instrument called a colposcope to point light onto the cervix from outside the body. Swabs or small samples of tissue can then be taken for more in-depth testing.
